Copyright and You

The question "May I post PDFs of my published papers on my own website?" often comes up.  The answer is:  It depends on the journal.  Each publisher has a different policy -- some grant authors the right to post the final, published version from the online journal; others allow only the author's preprint version, as formatted by the author, to be used.  Some permit neither, or do so only after a certain embargo period.  (When in doubt, it's always safe to simply provide a link to the URL or DOI of the published paper.)

A good place to check your particular journal's policies on web posting and self-archiving is the SHERPA/RoMEO website: . Almost all major scientific publishers are represented there.  Being aware of the publisher's policies before you sign any copyright transfer agreement for your paper can save headaches down the road!

Want more information about copyright law, author rights, and "fair use"?  The University of Minnesota Libraries have an excellent website on Copyright Education & Information for the academic and research community.

DTM and GL personnel with specific questions or concerns are welcome to contact me for more information.
